Team YMCA Derbyshire is very excited to have appointed an experienced education specialist to our newly-introduced Director of Lifelong Learning role.

Louise Curd, who has previously worked as Director of Programmes at Learn by Design and Director of Enterprise and Innovation at Derby College, will be joining us in early June.

The position has been created in response to the skills for jobs agenda set out by the government this year, which calls for more concentration on education and training.

Gillian Sewell, CEO of YMCA Derbyshire, said: “There’s never been a better time to invest in a Director of Lifelong Learning. Since the pandemic began, there has been a huge effect on unemployment rates. Now more than ever, we need to support people of all ages to develop their skills in a rapidly changing world.

“Adding Louise to our team will give us the expertise we need to contribute towards the economic recovery by providing opportunities to our community.”

Our charity has two education arms, YMCA Key College and YMCA Y-Kidz, working with children and young people in local schools, as well as in our own vocational training centres.

As an accredited Foyer, we also provides safe and nurturing places for people to live, learn and transition to independent living.  The aim, with the assistance of the Director of Lifelong Learning, is to compliment and expand these services to the wider community.

Louise Curd commented: “Being Derby born and bred and, having spent 25 years of my career working in the area prior to my current role at Learn by Design, I am excited to be involved again with the Derbyshire community.

“YMCA Derbyshire is a key organisation within the community it serves and I want to ensure that we continue to enhance this. I strongly believe in giving back to our communities.

“I’ve served as chair of governors for a primary school, as a member of the board of trustees for a charitable nursery and been a key fundraiser for a number of local and national charities.

“My passion for YMCA Derbyshire began eight years ago when I participated in my very first Sleep Easy. I’ll be looking forward to my first one as a part of the YMCA team.”
