YMCA Derbyshire is looking to welcome a volunteer to support the work that is carried out at our allotments in Derby, next to the Wilmorton Community Garden. This is a unique role as it involves a wide range of different activities. A volunteer would be expected to offer support to the team on the allotments to improve the site for users and provide support to our residents who are currently learning skills at the site. Possible activities for this role are, but not limited to:

  • General horticulture
  • Tending to the garden
  • Tree surgery
  • Building
  • Grounds keeping
  • Creating different spaces
  • Landscaping
  • Arts and crafts
  • Planning space usage

Volunteering hours will be negotiated between applicants and the accommodation manager before the role begins.

The ideal volunteer will have experience in horticulture and informal and non-formal education, but this is not essential. Applicants should have a desire to assist the community in learning new skills and creating interesting and usable spaces that can be opened up. We are also inviting volunteers to deliver occasional sessions around arts and crafts, well-being and outdoor skills. Applicants would also benefit from having an interest in intergenerational work.

Because of the work YMCA Derbyshire does, a DBS certificate will be required for successful applicants before they enter the role; YMCA Derbyshire will manage and pay for the DBS certificate on behalf of applicants. Volunteers will be supported in their role and have access to supervisions.
