Housing

YMCA Derbyshire provides Housing to over 225 individuals every night who would otherwise be without a safe place to live. Supporting those who have no place safe to live is our priority. YMCA Derbyshire is open 24/7, 365 days a year.

We take an Advantaged Thinking approach to the way we work, and to the way that we provide our housing related support. This means we take a solution-focused approach, which is based on people’s strengths not their challenges. Our teams have been trained to work, think, and communicate in a way that challenges negative expectations and the limitations that are sometimes placed on people who have experienced trauma or disadvantage.

We want to give people a home where they feel safe, and where they can learn, grow, and fulfil their dreams. We want all our residents to feel that they are respected and treated with dignity, regardless of who they are or where they come from.

Our housing pathways are tailored to meet individual needs and work towards the goal of helping people to gain essential life skills and have a positive move on to independent living. Take a look at our Youth & Community page to see how we support our people.

Meet Layla

Layla arrived at YMCA Derbyshire due to trouble at home and issues with her mental health. She had been attending sixth form, but her attendance was dropping, and eventually, Layla ended up leaving. Since being living at YMCA Layla has gone back to college, completed work experience and has now moved on to live in her own home.

“I have received a lot of support from YMCA. I completed the 'Independent Living' course and learnt about how to pay bills and budget my money. I then got accepted on to the YMCA and Toyota Working Assets programme. This gave me valuable work experience opportunities, and we went on a trip to London”.
