“Children thrive at this club”: YMCA Y-Kidz at Markeaton Primary School celebrates Strong Standard Ofsted report

Everything we do at YMCA Y-Kidz starts with the children – what they enjoy, what they need and how we can help them get the most from their time with us.

That was reflected in our latest Ofsted inspection, with YMCA Y-Kidz at Markeaton Primary School achieving a Strong Standard in all four areas inspected.

Ofsted summed up the experience for children simply:  “Children thrive at this club.”

Happy, settled and supported

Children have a say in the activities and resources available at YMCA Y-Kidz at Markeaton Primary School, helping our team shape their time around what they enjoy.

Ofsted found children to be “happy, settled and very comfortable in the company of the staff” and highlighted the friendly and playful relationships between children and the team. Inspectors also saw children playing contentedly, listening well and treating each other with kindness and respect.

A safe place to play

Safeguarding underpins everything we do at YMCA Derbyshire. Ofsted confirmed that safeguarding standards are met and described YMCA Y-Kidz at Markeaton Primary School as a “safe and secure environment for children to play in.”

The report also highlighted the focus on children’s physical and mental wellbeing. Children can get active through physical activities and outdoor play, while quieter indoor activities give them time to relax and recharge.

Helping every child feel that they belong

Every child is different, so our team takes the time to understand what they need to feel comfortable, included and able to enjoy their time with us.

Ofsted awarded YMCA Y-Kidz a Strong Standard for inclusion, finding that children with SEND or additional support needs are “fully involved in life at the club.” Staff adapt activities to children’s individual needs and provide safe spaces when children need some time alone.

It’s part of our belief at YMCA Derbyshire that everyone should have the opportunity to belong, contribute and thrive.

A Fantastic Achievement for the Y-Kidz Team

The inspection also awarded a Strong Standard for leadership and governance, highlighting the training and development opportunities available to staff.

Angelina Brett, Head of Early Years and Childcare Development at YMCA Derbyshire, said:

“I am absolutely delighted to share the outcome of our most recent Ofsted inspection. This is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to the dedication, passion and hard work of our YMCA Y-Kidz team. Most importantly, it reflects the safe, nurturing and enriching environment we strive to provide for every child and family we support.”
